Family Insurance - Covering Your Loved Ones

Family insurance is probably cheaper than insurance for individual members of your family. And, you will have the comfort of knowing that if the worst should happen, you will be well placed to ensure that your family are well looked after.

It is important though, that you understand your policy, and are aware of any exclusions or conditions. It is quite common to have excesses applied to a policy, whereby you as the policyholder would pay the first part of the cost of treatment, where the amount would be stipulated in the policy. The more excess you have, the lower the premium, but bear in mind that if the excess is too high, you might struggle to pay it, making the cover worthless.

Other conditions might apply to existing medical conditions at the time that the policy was taken out. Don't be tempted to hide such matters from the insurers, because they are likely to find out when you come to claim, and your claim could be negated. It would be better to be aware of potential problems and have a plan in mind to cover the eventuality.

Be aware of any restrictions in your policy regarding how and where treatment could take place. Ensure that you have access to the best hospitals. This is not something that you can deal with after the event, so it is best to be aware of this at the time of reading through the policy before taking it out.

Why not speak to your employers and see if they have a sponsored family health plan in place. Such a policy could represent excellent value for money as the quality of cover available might not be the same as you could normally afford.
