Motorcycle Insurance
Motorcycle insurance is just as much a necessity as that for its four wheeled counterpart. Without it, you just cannot hit the road. So what should you be thinking of when you look for motorcycle insurance? Let's see if we can give you some ideas.
As with cars, there are a number of factors that will affect the cost of your motorcycle insurance. Perhaps the first question is, do you just want the minimum cover, just enough to get you on the road, or do you want full and comprehensive cover? If you are new on the road and your motorbike is old and relatively cheap, then you might want to avoid the real expensive cover. As with most motorised insurance, the bare minimum cover is that for anybody whom you might have an accident with. It starts to get expensive when you want to cover yourself as well.
ANother factor that could work against you is your age. Young and inexperienced drivers are much more likely (in the opinion of the insurers) to have an accident. Right or wrong, if you are under 25, this will work against you. If you have driven a number of years and have experience and the benefit of a no claim bonus, then that could work in your favour.
Other factors are where you live and where the motorcycle is likely to be kept.
If you live in a high risk crime area, then you can expect to get penalised for keeping your vehicle at home. You might be able to mitigate this somewhat if you can keep the motorcycle in a garage overnight and have some sort of alarm system helping to protect it.
All are factors in how the insurance is calculated.
At the end of the day, it really boils down to what you can afford.
If you are short of money, then you could take out a simple third party type of cover, and the risk to you and your wheels is borne by yourself. Especially is some of the other factors mentioned above work against you, you might be forced into this course of action.
Finally, you should be prepared to shop around and get different quotes. Please do not take the first quote you get as gospel. Quotes can vary hugely, so it is worth your while taking your time and ensuring that you get the cover you want.
Equally, when you get a quote that you consider to be good, please check the small print and find out EXACTLY what you are covered for. Many seemingly cheap quotes hide things such as high excess charges, which mean that you will agree to bear the first X amount of any claim, where X is defined on your application form.
Don't let yourself in for any surprises when you do need to make a claim.
